Online Keno Rules

There are 80 numbers from which the player will select between 1 and 20. The number of balls selected varies depending on the rules at the casino in question and the preference of the player. Most online casinos allow the player to select a maximum of either 10 or 15. Once all players have made their selections and paid for their tickets, a drawing similar to a lottery takes place, with the 80 balls bouncing around inside a dome and 20 of them selected at random. Generally the more of the selected balls that match the player’s selection, the bigger the payoff.

Optimal Strategy and House Edge

In the above tables you will be able to see the House Edge figures for each number of balls selected in each version of the game. The only strategy decision when playing Keno is to choose the number of balls than minimizes the House Edge.

It should be noted that the House Edge for online and offline are usually substantially different. While this article specifically looks at the online variations, reports suggest that the House Edge for offline Keno is usually substantially higher, often exceeding 20%. However the rate of play when playing offline is far slower than the online (or virtual) games. This means that while the House Edge figures for the online game may look far more attractive than the offline variants, these games can end up costing the player far more due to the increased volume of bets derived from the increased rate of play.

Mathematics of Keno and Useful Numbers

For the more mathematically inclined we’ll include a basic example of how to calculate the House Edge for a specific number of balls selected with a specific paytable.

For this particular calculation we would recommend using Excel. As the numbers involved are often very large, the majority of scientific calculators will round off several digits resulting in less accurate calculations. As such below we will use Excel formatting to display the sum
